Lake Mead #LasVegasTrip

Our flight to Las Vegas was early so it was around noon time when we arrived there.  We  had 3 hours to spare before the check in at the hotel so we decided to  explore outside the city.  One of the two places we visited  was the Lake Mead.  We were actually heading to Hoover Dam  but since Lake Mead was on the way there, we  decided to  drop by at the over look and  enjoyed the scenery for a little bit.
Here are some of the photos on our way to Lake Mead.  Several paved roads wind through the dramatic desert scenery of Lake Mead National Recreation Area. Towering stark mountains, plateaus, desert basins of cacti and creosote bush, and vertical-walled canyons are some of the sights that we enjoyed seeing.
Lake Mead is in the Historic Boulder City.  You can see the BC writing on the rocky mountain.  Boulder City is a city in Clark County, Nevada. It is approximately 26 miles southeast of Las Vegas.  Did you know that Boulder City  is one of only two cities in Nevada that prohibits gambling?  It's an interesting fact  and also   surprising considering what Nevada is known for.
With lakes Mead and Mohave as the  main focus, Lake Mead National Recreation Area visitors can  enjoy a variety of water recreation activities in a rugged and picturesque setting. There are shaded picnic areas with tables, water, fire grills and restrooms are located throughout the area.
There are short desert hikes that lead to places that you won't see from a boat or car.  We didn't do any of these activities because it was so hot and we only went there to pass some time and just want to see the beautiful place we saw when we were  flying over it.
There are so many things that you can do at America's most diverse  recreation area.  You can ride a boat, go for a hike, do some cycling with your friends, or  do some camp and fishing.

I love the   landscapes and the the  blue water at this year-round playground.    The  spreads across  of mountains, canyons, valleys and two vast lakes.   You can see the Hoover Dam from the waters of Lake Mead or Lake Mohave, or find solitude in one of the park's nine wilderness areas.

Lakes Mead and Mohave offer some of the country's best sport fishing. Boating and water skiing are favorite activities on the broad expanses of open water, along with kayaking and canoeing.

Las Vegas and Lake Mead reminds me of the movie my husband and I watched, the  "Kill Me Again" with Val Kilmer, Joanne Whalley, and Pat Mulligan .    The movie is  partially filmed in Las Vegas with highlights from the Las Vegas Hilton. Some additional footage featured Reno, several desert scenes, and glimpses of Overton and Winnemucca.  It's exciting when you are watching a movie and you recognize the place and you say "I've been there!"
Going there in the middle of the day was not as relaxing as I thought it would because it was so hot that day that when you get out of the car, you are like inside an oven.  Nevertheless, we managed to looked around and take some photos before we went to Hoover Dam.

I would love to go back there someday, probably in the Fall season when it is not too hot and we could actually do outdoor activities without suffering from too much heat.  We had such a fun time though although it was hot, the view is stunning and the weather makes you want to  swim in the water.

Lake Mead is gorgeous isn't it? I haven't been there in years, but I remember being blown away with how big it was when I was there.

What a scenic and interesting area. I haven't been out this way before, but it would be a cool place to go on a road trip and check out everything it has to offer.

Great pics. I haven't been to Las Vegas in so long. People don't realize there's so much more to it than lights and gambling.

It sounds like a fun trip! The fun started even before checking in to the hotel! That's always a plus!

Your photos were fantastic. Loved how you captured those scenic views. It is just sad to see how much the water has receded. Anyway, I am glad you had a great time with the family even if it was blazing hot out there.

I remember my family taking me to Lake Mead back in the mid 1970's before Vegas had its mega boom. Thanks for sharing your journey.
